Job Interview Prep
What we practice
- organizing an answer without sounding scripted
- describing your experience with specific, relevant examples
- answering behavioural questions like "Tell me about a time when…"
- handling follow-up questions and asking thoughtful questions of your own
- speaking at a comfortable pace and making your main point clear
- adjusting for panel interviews, phone screens, and video interviews
Interviewing in a second language
If English or French is not your first language, an interview can feel like two tests at once. We can combine interview practice with work on the vocabulary of your field, pronunciation, and how answers are usually structured in Canadian workplaces. If clearer speech is a broader goal, see our accent modification service.
When speech affects your interview
As speech-language pathologists, we can also help when stuttering, word-finding, or other communication differences make interviews harder. We build strategies you can use in the room, and help you decide how, or whether, to talk about them with an interviewer.
What to expect
We start by learning about the role, the interview format, and what feels difficult. Then we run realistic practice questions, give specific feedback on how your answers come across, and try them again. We can also suggest short practice activities to use before interview day.
Job interview prep is available through home visits in communities we serve and online across British Columbia. Preparing a child for a school admissions interview instead? See school admissions prep. Preparing for a language test? Explore exam prep.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring to a session?
Bring the job posting, your resume, your interview invitation, and any questions you expect. If you do not have these yet, we can still practice common question types and the communication skills behind strong answers.
Do I need to memorize answers?
No. Memorized answers often sound scripted and are hard to adapt to follow-up questions. We help you plan the examples you want to use, then practice telling them naturally in your own words.
Can you help if English is not my first language?
Yes. We can work on the vocabulary for your field, pronunciation, and how answers are usually structured in Canadian interviews, alongside your interview practice. Sessions are also available in French.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals and how soon your interview is. Some people book one or two sessions before a specific interview. Others work with us over several weeks while job searching.
Can I use extended health benefits for job interview sessions?
If interview practice is part of speech-language therapy for a communication difficulty—such as anxiety that makes it hard to communicate in interviews, social-communication differences, stuttering, word-finding difficulty, or cognitive-communication challenges—it may be eligible for extended health benefits. Coverage depends on your plan; check with your insurer if you have questions.
