Online sessions are especially useful when therapy centres on conversation, listening, reading, or guided practice. We choose the format around your goals, comfort with technology, and the support available at home.
Adults
Many adult communication goals translate well to video sessions. For example:
Online support can also focus on the people helping communication happen each day. Parent coaching can help you use language strategies during play and routines with a younger child. Caregiver coaching can support conversation with an adult who has communication difficulties, or help a family use AAC tools at home.
A good fit matters more than age
A child does not have to sit still for a whole appointment to benefit, but they do need a way to engage with the session. Some children need an adult nearby to help with activities. Adults may also benefit from a family member helping with the technology or joining practice.
If therapy needs hands-on support or an assessment that cannot be completed well by video, we will discuss an in-person option. Children who learn mainly through direct, shared play may be better suited to in-person sessions or parent coaching.
This individual approach follows ASHA's telepractice guidance, which considers communication needs, attention, technology, and caregiver support when deciding whether online care is appropriate.
Make therapy part of everyday life
Skip the commute. Join from home without driving, parking, or arranging travel to Vancouver.
Practice where communication happens. Work on conversations, reading, and routines in a familiar setting.
Include the people who help. A parent, partner, or caregiver can join to learn how to support practice between sessions.
Our Vancouver-based team offers virtual speech therapy across British Columbia. You can also ask about online exam preparation and job interview coaching if your goals focus on an upcoming speaking task.
How online SLP sessions work
Start with a free consultation
Tell us what you or your child would like help with. We will discuss whether virtual sessions make sense and match you with a suitable member of our team.
Get an assessment and a plan
Your SLP gets to know your communication needs, chooses appropriate assessment activities, and sets practical goals with you.
Meet by video and practice between sessions
Sessions may include conversation, shared activities, demonstrations, and feedback. You will have strategies to use in daily life between appointments.
For your first session, have a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, reliable internet, and a quiet, well-lit space. We will let you know if a caregiver or specific materials should be available.
Questions about online speech therapy
Does online speech therapy work?
Online speech therapy can work well for many speech, language, and communication goals. The right fit depends on what you want to work on, your ability to take part in video sessions, and any support you need at home. Your SLP will help decide whether online, in-person, or a combination of sessions suits you best.
Is virtual speech therapy suitable for children?
It can be a good option for school-age children and teens who can participate in conversation, shared reading, games, and guided practice over video. There is no single age cutoff. Attention, communication needs, and caregiver support matter more than age alone. For younger children, parent coaching may be an option.
Can I see an online SLP from anywhere in BC?
Yes. West End Speech offers virtual speech-language pathology sessions across British Columbia, including Vancouver and communities beyond the Lower Mainland. You need a reliable internet connection and a suitable space for the session. Let us know where you will be joining from when you book.
Can speech therapy sessions be in English or French?
Yes. We offer online sessions in English and French. Tell us which language or languages you use and want support with so we can match you with a suitable clinician.
What equipment do I need for an online session?
A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet, well-lit space are a good starting point. A larger screen helps with shared activities. Your SLP will explain any materials or support needed before your appointment.
How much does online speech therapy cost?
Our current assessment and therapy rates are listed on the Pricing & Funding page. The first consultation is free. If you plan to use insurance or funding, check whether your plan covers virtual speech-language pathology services and ask us about your arrangement before booking therapy.
